In 1902, Prince-Abbot Joseph III (Archbishop Joseph-René Vilatte) appointed Louis Druel to the rank of Commandeur in the Order of the Crown of Thorns. Druel was President of the Grand Prix Humanitaire de France et des Colonies, which would be subsequently absorbed into the Order as its Cross of Merit.
