The Baptism of Our Lord

Dear Brothers and Confreres,

Today is the Great Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. In Axum, Ethiopia, today the Ark of the Covenant is venerated in its Tabernacle. It is, indeed, the Festival of Jesus’s Divinity. The Collect of today’s Mass reads, “O God, whose Only Begotten Son has appeared in our very flesh, grant, we pray, that we may inwardly be transformed through him whom we recognize as outwardly like ourselves.”

A great theologian wrote that it is through the Holy Spirit we obtain salvation and through the Holy Spirit we have Faith and that the Holy Spirit will see that neither ever leaves us. Can we name three persons who had this Faith in Christ and lived it and have inspired us to pass it on to others? Who are they in our lives? And to whom have we passed this Faith in Salvation in our Lord Jesus Christ?

“After the Lord was baptised, the heavens were opened, and the Spirit descended upon him like a dove, and the voice of the Father thundered: This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Mt.3:16-17

Among Greek Orthodox congregations today a Cross is cast upon the waters of a river or bay. Divers jump in to find the Cross. It is deemed a great blessing for the one who retrieves the Cross from the depths. “Behold the One of whom John said: I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
